(Note: There has been a deadline reset! The four day limit starts today 1/21. There must be at least one post from every character by 1/25!)

Dr. Finkelstein was getting annoyed. Interruption after interruption, then terms and conditions, and now his subject wanted one last look at a soul! What next? A credit in the science journals?

"Yes, yes, fine!" He waved his hand irritably and wheeled himself over to the cabinet by the wall.

He unlatched it with a smooth click. While the outside of the cabinet was wooden, the inside was a spectacular example of modern science and magic. A dazzling array of vials, jars, glowing and wriggling could be seen behind a clear, glass case enforced with grains of magic mirror, courtesy of a certain demon from another season.

He snapped off his right glove, revealing a sickly pale hand, small and frail. He pressed his right thumb on a tiny button until it glowed green and a soft whir was heard, signalling that the case had been unlocked. Deftly, he pulled down a particular bottle which glowed from within. It was dazzling and bright and...unsettling. Some magic should not be contained in jars.

"There you have it. Sally, if you please." He held it up in the air for her to take while he operated, "Now, if you're quite ready, we will begin the procedure."

Lying once more on the cold, hard table, Aerynn watched the doctor as he turned away from her, clearly grumbling about her question. A slight frown came to Aerynn's lips. Perhaps the request was unnecessary, but it was important to her. More important than anything else right now. Even if it wasn't her soul, it was a soul, and that was all she needed if she ever hoped to find her own. It was largest piece of the puzzle Aerynn had ever been given; she would not lose it.

As Finkelstein went to the cabinet and unlocked it through some scientific sorcery, Aerynn lifted herself once more into a sitting position. She wanted a good look, she wanted to see this with her own two eyes as best she could.

And there it was, inside a jar, its contents glowing with an otherworldly energy. Aerynn's breath caught, she was sure her heart had stopped beating. A soul. What she had spent the last two years of her life searching for, and here one was in the same room as her. Aerynn raised her arms, her hands opening and closing, reaching for what was just out of her reach.

There was a silent moment as the jar passed from the doctor to the rag doll woman. Aerynn's mouth was dry, and she had to take a breath, because she had forgotten how to breathe.

"May I hold it?" the aegyl said, her voice barely above a whisper.

That dazzling light... Rave felt a sense of unease in the back of her mind. Something screaming, but muffled. Aerynn's reaction to the magic inside that jar was a confusing one. The need to even hold the soul was strong for the winged one.

For all Rave knew, this was a typical soul. Rave's own had been altered by the contracts, and was metaphorically as patchwork as Sally appeared on the physical plane. With that knowledge, one would think that those contracts - the pieces of the spirits attached to her soul that gave her magic - would affect the appearance of the soul outside the body. But for Aerynn to reach out with the reaction she had - like finding something important after so much time spent searching...

Was it Aerynn's?

Rave didn't know. They each had something taken. Rave was under the impression that the riddles given to each applied to different members of the team. And she knew how, sometimes, riddles could be deceptively straightforward in how they were solved.

Let's experiment on a heart or two...

Her lips thinned. Something was going on in her head, something she wasn't quite understanding. This wasn't an op. This was a game. A scavenger hunt. Why was that nagging feeling coming up now? Aerynn had volunteered. And Aerynn, she knew from that short time before Traverse Town was more or less turned into a glacier, could be very stubborn.

She had volunteered. She was still in possession of herself entirely - there was no risk of something else pulling the strings. Rave knew the horror stories - what happened when too many contracts with the same spirit ran the risk of the human contractor's free will being overridden by the spirit. Aerynn was exercising her free will, and had volunteered, entirely of her own accord.

But did solving this game... really require this literal an answer to that particular riddle?

Sally, with all her kindness, started to give Aerynn the jar, but was stopped abruptly by a bark from the doctor.

"You may not!" He wheeled over to his operating table, putting his glove back on with an angry snap. "It might contaminate the whole operation. No to mention, it was not part of our arrangement. How do I know you won't try to run off with it?"

This time, when he picked up his scalpel, he did it with focused deliberation. No more stalling! He didn't wait, he didn't ask, he didn't prep, he pressed his cold, sharp knife against Aerynn's chest, gently at first, preparing to apply pressure to break the skin and collect his prize.

As Doctor Finkelstein snapped at her, Aerynn hesitated. Her hands quit grasping thin air, and her eyes shot from the soul back to the doctor in his wheelchair. As he spoke of contamination and arrangements, a flair of anger set Aerynn's heart aflame. Her lips pursed, her head turning back to gaze in wonder at the soul. This was her bargain, her heart she was giving and he would not allow her the courtesy to see? How cruel of him.

"I would not," Aerynn said, and the indignity in her voice was plain and apparent, accentuated by how strange it sounded coming from her, when she usually held herself with so much reserve. To think that he would accuse her of such an act. He did not know her—why did he think he did?

A sharp point pressed against her sternum. Aerynn looked down, still sitting at the edge of the table. The doctor had the scalpel in hand, and it was clear that he wished not to have any more distractions. Despite her reservations, Aerynn followed his lead, lying once more on the table, the blade guiding her position. He wished to do this now. Very well. Aerynn braced herself, understanding there was to be no drugs or anesthetic for this operation. Her head turned, the aegyl keeping her eye on the soul. She would make it through this, and when she did, she would have a better understanding of how she might find her own soul.

Perhaps, then, she might have a working heart, free of flaws, better than before. That was what he had said … right?

Emri disappeared in a wink! Where there was once a skeleton man, there was now nothing but air.

With nothing to stand in his way, Dr. Finkelstein made his first cut. The knife slid easily into Aerynn's soft flesh, as though it were butter, spilling hot, red blood over her flesh and soaking her clothing. Science was messy. But science was also precise.

"It is 12:15pm and I am making the first cut into the subject." He announced to his recording device, which was still running. His hands did not waver, his movements were not clumsy. He was careful and deadly accurate as he cut a path through her chest. Dr. Finkelstein knew what he was doing. He already had a store of blood and a series of tubes to hook up to the heart, to preserve it and study it, and ultimately improve it. Like others before him, he viewed the Heart as a tool, an item of desire to study and store in glass jars.

Should history repeat itself, the same folly awaited him as others who fell under the spell of Darkness.

But for now...there was only the red blood which pumped and bled; the very life force of Aerynn was leaving her with no ceremony--

"Stop! You have to stop! Jack wouldn't have wanted this!" Came Sally's cry, too late and too little. It's true that Aerynn was not a citizen of Halloween Town and it's true that she had agreed upon the terms, even volunteered to give up her life, but it was wrong, all wrong!

(Sorry for short phone response. Ty for pass. Water shall be consumed.)

The event was set in motion. Her plea had somehow made it to the skeleton man. With no words all three team mates watched as Aerynn sat on the table. Her chain mates were unusually quiet. When they had first met, Rave was insisting on keeping aerynn nourished and alive. Where had that care for safety gone? Riful knew the selfish nature of humans very well. This armored woman was no different from any other civilian. How intriguing that she'd give up aerynn's life so easily.

Words were spoken. Over the hum of the room's instruments Riful barely heard much of what was said. She watched aerynn lay back on the table, the scalpel inches away from her skin. Soon the metal touched her palour, Riful grinning at the idea of the incoming bloodbath.

A flash of light obscured riful's view. Suddenly, the chains jingled and the Skelton man disappeared. Had his failure to disrupt the dissection caused this? Had he been there purely to prevent a life from fading out? He was most ineffective, Riful surmised. He wouldn't be missed. His ideals conflicted with the spirit's.

The scalpel had penetrated flesh. The sight of blood caught Riful's attention once more. This was the moment she was waiting for; did Aerynn have a soul? Was her heart even capable of the feelings re hired to fuel Riful's power? She was on the edge of her toes, waiting for the woman's last breath...

The ragdoll woman stepped in. Riful scowled. She turned on her feel to face the woman, her disappointment apparent on her scowling features.

"Do not interrupt." She stated with deadpan determination. Her standing in the matter was quite obvious; kill the winged woman. No one would interfere with her retrieval of possibly two souls.

((Jim, if you need a clarification of why Rave's acting the way she is in this post, feel free to message me.))

"Stop! You have to stop! Jack wouldn't have wanted this!"

"Do not interrupt."

Civilian protest. And their not-all-there companion was advocating for the operation to continue. The skeleton man disappeared, leaving only the clattering of chains in his place.

A sharp pain suddenly seemed to assault the soulless mage's skull, causing her to grip her head with one hand. The voice that spoke was vaguely familiar, faint to the point she couldn't entirely make out words... but it was very sternly expressing disapproval about letting this operation continue. And considering how it spoke, it was very familiar with how Rave normally operated. And... like mentioned before, familiar.

Rave was pretty sure that a conscience didn't normally manifest like this, especially with the movement that it was specifically instructing her to make and telling her WHY.

That voice in her head was telling her to act as she had before her soul was taken - as the person who still gave a damn - and if she wanted her soul back, then damn it, she needed to do this now.

'...Fine.'

Eyes narrowed, cold and almost lifeless but not outright dead, Rave suddenly crossed the gap, grabbing Doctor Finkelstein's wrist holding the scalpel and removing it from Aerynn's torso, before taking hold of the scalpel itself.

"I would advise listening to your assistant. She seems to have the best sense of ethics out of anyone here now. And I'm quite sure that there are some standards even you are bound to uphold in this town."

The skeleton's words had fallen on deaf ears due to attempting to appeal to people whose minds had been twisted by the lack of what made them whole.

Sally, on the other hand, had given a perfect reason as to why this wasn't the way to go.

Jack was the Game Master for this little game. If he would not have approved of this... action of those in his game, then the action would be stopped. Even if this could yield Aerynn's heart as being stronger, better than it was before...

...what was the point if Aerynn was dead?

Doctor Finkelstein was not a strong man. His wrist must have felt like a twig in Rave's grip, ready to break in half with the slightest squeeze. Whatever muscles he had had deteriorated over the years as he grew more and more dependent on his giant brain. Of course, he immediately lost hold of the scalpel, his work coming to an unceremonious halt.

"Ooh oooh, my wrist! Sally! Stop her!" He raged, his voice even more nasal in his fury and distress. He cared nothing for Rave's words on ethics, "We had an agreement!"

But Sally was not about to play along with this twisted game any longer. With determination she pushed past Riful and strode right up to Rave and shoved the bottle into her free hand. She would deal with the consequences of her actions later, but for now she would do the right thing! "Here! Take it!"

The jar shoved into her arms, Rave gave a sort of absentminded nod, tugging at the chains for her companions to follow. If they were right, then they had fulfilled the parameters of the first riddle. Now they needed to complete two more.

This was not what Riful had in mind. The operation ceased, and the winged woman was as intact as she had been before. The only sign of her near-death experience lay in the cut down the front of her chest. Scowling, the spirit felt the tug of her chains and realized their other companion wanted to move on. But when she turned to glare at her raving "friend", her gaze was met with a shower of sparkles, the chain going limp and the crash of the jar falling to the floor. Eyes wide, Riful watched woefully as the spirit trapped in the jar was released. It glowed so wonderfully, the ghostly maiden urged towards its light, but she was unable to capture it! Wisp did not heed her calls.

The spirit dispersed. Riful sighed.

Her face emotionless once more, she turned to face her final partner. Stuck together, she wanted to tear the winged woman apart. No, Riful would have to keep her alive until Wisp was returned to her.

"Get up," She ordered, her ruby eyes following the length of the cut on the girl's chest. With any luck, she wouldn't be a complete burden to the spirit maiden.

Aerynn had waited for the scalpel to slice through her flesh, steeling herself for the touch of cold metal, the parting of flesh, the pain, but none of that came. Only a slight pressure at her chest, as if someone were simply running their finger down her sternum.

Sure that the good doctor was simply testing things for preparation, Aerynn resolved herself to sit through whatever medical procedures needed to be accomplished before they could open her chest and check the contents of her heart. But then it all stopped. A commotion was raised, from Rave to Finkelstein until it all culminated into the sound of shattering glass.

"Get up."

Aerynn obeyed without question, sitting up from the table and surveying all around her. Finkelstein was grumbling, Sally tending to him. Riful seemed impatient, and Rave was gone along with the soul.

A sense of emptiness grew inside Aerynn. So close, and she still received no answers. A red line was drawn down her chest, but there was no accompanying pain. Dabbing a finger in the red liquid oozing from the slice, Aerynn put it in her mouth. Strawberries. Oh.

So it was just a parlor trick. A deceit of the eyes. For some reason Aerynn was unsatisfied.

She supposed that was it. They were done there. Rave had received her object and dispersed. The aegyl wondered if she might rejoin them in time but did not spare much thought on the matter.

"I am ready," she said to her chained companion. "I suppose we should visit the thieves next." But where those thieves might be, Aerynn had no clue.

Wandering over to where Rave had dispersed, Aerynn picked through the pieces of glass and retrieved the riddles given to them.

"Double double toil and trouble
"fire burn and cauldron bubble

"When shall we three meet again?
"In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

"We’ll keep the prize we stole from them.
"Wrapped up tight in our secret den.

"Do you know what it means?" she said to Riful.
